Standalone happiness

Many months ago I had read this poem with Chetana, then in one of her posts and today it seems apt here:
Comes the Dawn

After awhile you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul.
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
And company doesn't mean security.
And you begin to understand that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises,
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head held high and your eyes wide open.
With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child.
You learn to build your roads
On today because tomorrow's ground
Is too uncertain for plans, and futures have
A way of falling down in midflight.
After awhile you learn that even sunshine
Burns if you get too much.
So you plant your own garden and decorate
Your own soul, instead of waiting
For someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure,
That you really are strong.
And you really do have worth.
And you learn and learn...and you learn
With every goodbye you learn.

The happenings of late had made me forget the poem n the circumstances in which I put it up. Thanks for bringing it back to me. Reminds me of how I grew up, from a rosy eyed gawky teenager-at-heart to a young woman, who (at least thinks that she)is getting into things with eyes wide open.
As Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said, dont be with someone because you need them, cause your needs are ever changing. Be with someone because you want to be with them.

its when ur soul is decorated by yourself,
strengthened by the loneliest of times,
that is when someone who appreciates this beauty and strength comes along and takes your heart in return for his/hers and that person's soul is also equally beautiful and strong.
That is the person for you.
Its always 50-50.

@ bastet,
Yes, dear! We learn from past experiences, and can do only as best as our intuition right now...however it turns out, I am sure, the future will bring something to smile, look back and feel good!

@ nissim,
U give me hope! And you are absolutely right about 50-50! I just wait..
